BRIEF:
Tautoko: The songs in the materials. This project performs a close investigation of a selected material harvested from the material environs, investigating its ecologies, histories, qualities, and possibilities. Through a material-led process, I will design the interior of an experimental ‘whare waiata’ - a house of song - in which the materials support the processes of learning waiata. The whare will explore how materials might ‘sing‘ of its own stories and the stories in the land. Through manipulating and installing the material to reveal three different qualities and attributes, the design will facilitate a series of three activities/experiences through which those stories might be learned. The design will consider both sensory/aesthetic/atmospheric qualities and the functional detailing of a material system designed for cycles of deconstruction and re-use.
OUTCOME:
Step in line, and follow ahead...
The conveyor facilitates the learning of waiata with a "factory method" designed and explored through the reuse of Coca-Cola cans. This space focuses on creating an efficient "cookie cutter" experience, prided on checking boxes and hitting targets, such as teaching as many participants as possible.
Three material explorations inside the Pavillon assist this alternative method of learning, through dividers, curtains, and wall details. Its sharp dark interior welcomes an intense dystopian atmosphere.
